Hack4Rail 2026

Hack4Rail is an employee hackathon held since 2018 by the three German-speaking railways ÖBB, SBB, and DB. It was formerly known as the “Dreiländerhack” and is organized in partnership with the OpenRail Association, whose member railways also receive tickets to the hackathon.

Hack4Rail focuses on topics of international rail transport, the exchange of knowledge and digital solutions across railway companies. In just two and a half days of hacking, teams work on cross-railway challenges and develop digital and data-driven prototypes.

Join us in Vienna from 22–24 June!

This year’s motto, Connected Railways for Open Solutions, invites participants to collaborate across organizations and develop open, interoperable solutions. Contribute your skills and be part of Hack4Rail 2026.

How can I participate?

Option 1: Submit a Challenge

Do you have a railway-specific problem and see a hackathon as an opportunity to come up with some fresh solutions?

  • Share your challenge with us via this form till March 19, 2026.
  • Before your proposal, please read our information for challenge owner.
  • If your challenge is selected for Hack4Rail, we look forward to your pitch live in Vienna. You will find out if your challenge is included by the end of March, at the latest.

Submit a Challenge now

What is a good challenge?

  • Your challenge topic is relevant to at least one other railway company. Ideally, it would be relevant to all of them.
  • You are allowed to discuss the topic or challenge with the other railway companies during the hackathon. It's not confidential.
  • You have the potentially needed data or know where to obtain it. "Dummy data" might also suffice. If not, we'll support you with this.

Option 2: Join as a participant

Would you like to solve a railway-specific challenge and exchange ideas with other European railway workers?

  • As a participant, you actively contribute to the hackathon by forming a team with others and tackling a challenge together.
  • Railway-specific knowledge is just as important as data, coding, or other IT skills.
  • We will open the registration by announcing the participating challenges on April 01, 2026

Themed tracks

There are 6 themed tracks, which cover important international topics for all railway companies. They primarily serve as inspiration and to bring structure into the challenge overview.

1. Schedule Flexibility and Capacity Optimization 🚦🛤 📆

In this theme track, we are looking for challenges that deal with optimizing scheduling and capacity utilization. The goal is to find innovative solutions that enable more efficient planning and use of track capacities, avoid overcrowding, and minimize empty runs. We expect creative approaches that contribute to seamless, efficient rail traffic.

2. Cross-Border Mobility and Logistics 🚅🌍📦

In this theme track, we are looking for challenges that enhance the experience and efficiency of cross-border passenger and freight transport. Concepts should harmonize information flows, enrich long-distance travel, and promote the internationalization of services. We expect proposals that strengthen market positioning and increase system stability and punctuality through innovative processes along the travel and transport chain. What new services could be created to facilitate access to rail transport?

3. Efficient Disruption and Construction Site Management 🛠📲🌱

This theme track calls for challenges that enable quick and effective management of construction sites and disruptions in rail traffic. We are looking for ways to guarantee operational safety, optimize information flows, and ensure the reliability of rail traffic even in unforeseen circumstances. Also sought are innovative concepts that lead to improved deployment planning, sustainable performance, and a reduction of noise and CO2 emissions.

4. Train Stations as Mobility Hubs 🏬🚉🚲

This theme track seeks challenges that improve the function and experience of train stations and their surroundings. We are expecting innovative approaches for barrier-free access, smart space management, and the integration of mobility hubs to increase accessibility and comfort. Furthermore, ideas are sought that support an integrated mobility chain and offer individualized customer services at the station, establishing it as a central service location. "Station as a Service" is more than just a catchphrase here.

5. Green Digitalization for Environmental Protection and Sustainability 🌳🚞💚

This theme track invites the submission of challenges that address pioneering ideas and challenges in the areas of resilience, decarbonization, energy efficiency and circularity. We are looking for digital solutions that affect all areas of railway operations and logistics.

6. Mobility and Logistics Think Tank 🔮🤖🔭

This theme track invites the submission of challenges that deal with disruptive and forward-thinking ideas for the mobility and logistics of the year 2035. We are looking for creative approaches that may lie outside established patterns of thought and have the potential to fundamentally change the sector.

FAQ

  • What is a hackathon?

A hackathon (a combination of the words “hack” and ‘marathon’) is an event in which interdisciplinary teams work together over a short period of time - usually 24 or 48 hours - to develop solutions to specific problems (“challenges”).

  • Do I need prior hackathon experience to participate?

No, previous participation or special experience is not required.

  • Do I need to be able to program or have IT expertise to participate?

No programming skills are required to participate. An IT background and an interest in open source solutions are advantageous. In addition, Hack4Rail requires many other skills, such as railway-specific knowledge, analytical thinking, and structured working methods.

  • Who can participate in Hack4Rail?

Employees of the three railways ÖBB, SBB, and DB, as well as member railways of the OpenRail Association (ORA), are eligible to participate. Each railway has its own contingent of available places. The hackathon is held in English and is hosted each year by one of the three founding railways – DB, SBB, or ÖBB.

  • How can I participate in Hack4Rail?

There are two ways to take part in Hack4Rail:

Either submit your own challenge and participate if it is selected. You will then be automatically registered.

Or you can apply as a participant and work in a team on one of the selected challenges. It is important that you inform your team leader before registering, whether as a challenge owner or as a participant.
